One of our favourite things about being in the boat sales business is that we get to meet keen fishermen and women from all over Australia. We sell our Vindicator Quality Aluminium Boats & Trailers right across the country and it’s great to chat with fellow fishing enthusiasts from other places. It seems we all agree on one thing: we are lucky to live in this wonderful country surrounded by beautiful beaches, wide open seas and great fishing spots. You all know we love fishing our local Fraser Coast, but we thought we’d share some of the other fishing locations around Australia –

Fishing in Far North Queensland

Far North Queensland is renowned for its good fishing and the city of Cairns is a well-known destination for those who love to throw in a line. Because of its close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, the area is home to a wide variety of fish species. If you are not a fishing boat owner, there are plenty of fishing charters that can take you to the best spots on the Reef.

Catch a Barramundi at Kakadu

Kakadu in the Northern Territory is a National Park so you will need a permit to fish here, but this area is simply stunning and offers up the best Barramundi you will find anywhere. Alternatively, there are tourism companies who have the correct permits to take you out for a day’s fishing in this natural wonderland.

Broome and 80 Mile Beach

The remote area of Broome in Western Australia is another excellent spot for fishing. The small population coupled with the out-of-the-way location mean that there are loads of fish to be caught in and around Broome. 80 Mile Beach, about 350 k’s south of Broome, is also an idyllic spot to spend some time. Take your beach rod and you will probably snag a salmon for your supper.

Wherever you are situated, Watson’s Marine can supply you with our aluminium boats and boat trailers to ensure you many happy years fishing. If you’d like to share your favourite fishing spot, we’d love to hear from you.

More fishing spots next time!

Recently my son Glenn & I travelled together to Fraser Island for a very special event. We were both towing one of our 7.2m Vindicator Quality Aluminium Boats, Glenn in front with last year’s model and I travelled behind with our new 7.2m Vortex Design Hull.

We recently introduced this design to our 7.2m & 6.8m models in celebration of Watson’s Marine 50th year in the Marine Trade; 50 years of dedication to our clients. You would have to think, we must be doing something right to have lasted this long. Our family of three generations have enjoyed the ride with its up’s & downs, for we have a passion for what we do. No matter what you do, you would be astonished with what you can accomplish with passion.

I must say there is no better way to cap off the 50th year than with the new design for the larger boats in our range, it has proven to be truly amazing.

vindicator hull design

Here we are at Inskip Point, heading over to Fraser Island with last year’s design in front and the all-new 7.2m hull design behind. Both boats were powered by twin 115hp Yamaha Four Stroke Engines.  Please give us a call if you would like to know more on the difference the new hull delivers – 5482 2135.

It has been an awesome trip to have both of these two fine hulls side by side to compare. Running both boats side by side offshore was a great way to demonstrate the performance of the new hull design, Both Glenn, myself & our crew were very impressed with how the vortex design worked so well.

I suppose you could say the one thing that sets us apart from many boat builders, is the fact we love and have experienced offshore boating & fishing – at its’ best & worst. It‘s a shame at times that work has to get in the way, mostly when the weather is at its best. Beyond a shadow of doubt I am sure you all would agree!

Setting off for our destination

The testing of our boats & trailers on Fraser Island is critical to the success of our boats’ performance and a great test of the strength & durability of our trailers. Setting off for our destination, travelling down the road, up the beach, over rocks and over some pretty ordinary sand tracks, just getting to Orchard Beach is a test on its own. It’s a breeze when the beach is good but a bit ordinary when the beach is bad and the sand is soft and powdery.

Going Fishing

Unloading successfully off the beach, driving out through the surf to our fishing grounds, experience catching good quality fish with each cast, returning in not so good weather and wild seas, coming in through the surf, reloading the boat onto the trailer at the end of the day or evening – what a trip! And then, enjoying a drink or two while all gathered around the cleaning table to clean our catch of the day, and of course telling a few tales and taking the mickey out of some of the crew. “A Champion Day – All you can say – out of this world.”

aluminium boat

The all-new 7.2m Vindicator Vortex Hull Design. Vindicator Quality Aluminium Trailers are built out of structural aluminium materials, Australian running gear where we can, and gusseted for strength. They are strong, durable and very easy to tow.

Testing on Fraser is the best way to make sure our Vindicator Quality Aluminium Boats deliver the performance, stability, crew comfort and most importantly, are very safe for our crew members & family. All of our Vindicator Boat designs & trailers are tested in this way.

I have included a few new great optional extras in this new 7.2m Vindicator: A side entry door with a swing opening, a great asset for bringing in those big fish but a real blessing when loading & unloading, making the job of loading the ice boxes and heavy gear so much easier; the new Garmin 7412 GPS/ Sounder/ Auto Pilot was remarkable, so clear and easy to use, the Garmin Auto Pilot, was my favorite, especially for the long trips out to our fishing grounds and back home, particularly when coming home in 25kt winds just amazing. We had 40ft boats with auto pilots, this pilot runs the boat very straight it is almost like set and forget, to a certain extent of course, keeping in mind someone must be at the helm at all times. You never know what’s out there on the big blue ocean.

All in all, our trip was a great success. We put the boat through her paces for 5 solid days of action. We experienced all kinds of conditions from a totally flat sea to a storm with 25 knot winds. The Vindicator performed excellently in all situations. The Trailer got us there & home again with no complications. We couldn’t be happier. Can’t wait till the next trip up the Island! I

f you would like to take a look at the new design, pop in and see us at Watson’s Marine. We’d love to see you. We recently finished a new 6.8m with the new Vortex Design that was on Fraser around the same time, watch for their testimonial on our website and check out their photos soon on Facebook.

There is a new 6.8m at Watson’s Marine being fitted up for delivery soon and another at the painters, both have the new Vortex Design Hull. We also have one of our 5.8m Vindicator Quality Aluminium Boat & Trailer combination on display and a 6.2m waiting to go to the painters, great to see in its raw state. A second 6.2m is being constructed at the moment, great opportunity to see the construction under floor. All clients have purchased Vindicator Quality Aluminium Trailers to complement their boats.

To celebrate our 50th we are giving away a loads of prizes each month and on the 1st December, 2016 we are giving one lucky shopper a great free boat, motor, trailer, fishing tackle & crabbing package. Call into store, plenty of specials and a chance to win some great prizes. In the meantime, click here to see the new Vindicator in action.

minkota electric engine

Once upon a time you could anchor your boat, throw in a line and be assured of a catch. As many fisherman know, these days are quite different; fish have become smarter, very timid and harder to find. The only way to keep ahead of the game is to take advantage of today’s improved technology and tackle, and to polish up on your techniques!

Have a Fishing Game Plan

Set out a game plan for your fishing trip. You will need to check the tides and weather. The tides play a big part in the movement of fish. The change of tide (first of the run in and first of the run out tide) is generally always a good time to fish, so time your fishing trip to catch these times and tides. If that means an early start, it will be well worth it when you bring home the fish! We believe very early morning is always the best time to catch fish. Weather is important too and with increased accuracy in forecasting, the angler has got better chances of choosing the right day to go fishing. As everyone who owns a boat knows, it is so relaxing and stress free to sit in a boat on the water with fishing line in hand, watching the world go by.

Don’t Be Afraid to Move your Boat Around

Moving your boat from place to place, will help you find the fish. If you aren’t having any joy in one spot, pull anchor and move along. The more ground you cover, the more chance you have of finding the fish. This is where your GPS/ Sounder will pay off. Your sounder will help you find the areas, likely to attract fish. Reefs, bommies and drop-offs are excellent spots for a large selection of reef fish. Mangrove Jack, a wonderful eating fish, love logs and banks – this is where the side imaging transducer sounders shine. When fishing the dams try travelling up where the old trees & logs are; those fresh water fish like Bass, Yellow Belly and if you are lucky maybe a Barra may be lurking. Your GPS/Plotter can save those spots for next time you go fishing too, also retaining lots of good information that can help you with your next game plan.

There is nothing better than a Minkota electric engine mounted on the rear or front of your vessel to move you quietly around the edge of mangroves for those large Whiting, good size Bream, not to forget those great tasting Flathead and of course, Mangrove Jack. The Minkota is very beneficial when fishing the dams as well. They are becoming very popular with fisherman fishing off shore, using the Minkota to keep them in the right spot and prevent them from drifting too far off the bommie where the fish are congregating. With the more up to date electronic equipment, fishing has become more of a science than good luck. Your depth sounder can help identify where the fish are, so you can make sure your line is long enough and weighted well enough to reach the right depths especially when you are chasing those Spanish Mackerel or Tuna. This is where the Cannon Downrigger comes into play, nothing is left to chance.

Watch for the Signs

Keep your eyes wide open. Occasionally you will spot a school of fish on the surface. Always be prepared and have your line ready, you need to be able to throw in your line  immediately. It is always best to have several lines rigged to target the different areas and fish you may come across. Opportunities don’t knock every day. Watch for seabirds feeding too. Observing the behaviour of sea birds can identify where the fish are running. Watch for the movement of water as well, for this is where the bait fish are feeding.

Remember, practice makes perfect. Go fishing in the water as often as you can. Don’t be left on the bank this season. Come in and spend $20.00 and go into the draw to win a Boat, Motor, Trailer and Fishing & Crabbing Gear from Watsons Marine Gympie & Fishermans Warehouse. We’d love to hear some of your fishing tips and stories. Stay tuned for more tips from us next time.

fishing & boating tips

The team at Watson’s Marine has one thing in common: we love boating and love to fish. Over the years we’ve picked up a few helpful fishing tips that we’d like to pass on to our readers.

Fishing & Boating Tip 1 – Be Prepared

The old adage, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure, is also true for fisherman. Before you head out in the fishing boat make sure you have attended to regular boat & trailer maintenance. Give your engine a run and go over the battery and electronics to make sure they are working well. Check your trailer, bearings, rollers etc. If in doubt, give the crew at Watson’s a call, and we will get your boat & trailer in tip top running condition. You don’t want to be one of those fishermen who get to the boat ramp only to discover you have engine trouble.

Make sure your rods and reels are working well, they too need to be maintained. Tony from Fisherman’s Warehouse is the man for the job. Regularly check fishing lines, swivels and hooks, replace where necessary. Run your finger over your lines to check for damage, check your knots by giving them a good yank, best to change your hooks each time you go fishing, not worth losing a big fish over.

Don’t waste your valuable fishing time on fix-ups. Check your gear before you hit the water. By being prepared you will ensure a hassle-free relaxing & enjoyable fishing trip.

Fishing & Boating Tip 2 – Name Your Target

It’s a good idea to think about what type of fish you are after. That way you can get organized to catch your target species. Your choice will, of course, be based on the time of year. If you are not sure what’s about in your area, have a chat to some local anglers. Having fishing friends is the best way to find out where the fish are biting too. Other good sources of information is Tony at Fisherman’s Warehouse, Gympie’s best bait shop, boat charter places and internet forums.

Technology also helps take the guess work out of your fishing trip. Sea surface temperature charts can be downloaded from the internet and can help you find fish-holding temperature breaks. These are created using real time satellite images. Long range weather forecasts are also available to help you plan the ideal time for your fishing trip. There are many great weather Apps to download on your phone these days.

So get your gear prepared, find out where the fish are, and have a great fishing trip.

We’d love to hear your favorite fishing tips or fishing news. More tips next time.
